Joining Phoenix Gardeners

We are keen to encourage anyone who has an interest in the town looking nice and wants to help to join us.

There are three ways of joining in:

a) help with the tubs.  We are looking for people who can give about half an hour a week to work as part of a small team (probably two or three together) to mind two or three tubs in or around the town centre.  We have a main planting for the summer bedding in May and then throughout the summer we ask the volunteers to dead head, water and general keep the tubs tidy.  At the end of September, we remove the summer bedding and then plant the tubs with bulbs and winter bedding.  The autumn is generally left quiet – a time to recharge batteries.

b) help in the Abbey Grounds.  A group of volunteers meet fortnightly on a Wednesday morning to maintain the main flower bed in the Abbey Grounds.  Whilst the main tasks are weeding and tidying , there is a lot of enthusiasm for upgrading the planting to enhance what was formerly a neglected space.  No gardening expertise is necessary, just turn up and join in.  We welcome people on a “come when you can” basis; so, whilst we hope you want to make a commitment and join in regularly, we understand if family or other commitments make it difficult.  Every little helps

c help with fund raising and administration.  Like every organisation we need to raise funds to maintain our activities.  We buy new bulbs and plants for the town and also raise monies to replace some of the tubs which are elderly.  If you can help by running a coffee morning or helping at our plant sale then please let us know. We would also welcome people who would want to be a “Friend of Phoenix Gardeners”; you may not want to take an active role gardening, but may be prepared to pay an annual donation to help and support our work

Potting up Plug Plants

We buy plug plants in the winter which we then pot up and Deer Park School grow them on for us.  We are expecting our plug plants to arrive in the third week of March and are planning to plant up over the weekend 24th – 28th March.

Can you help?  If you can offer two hours on either the Friday, Saturday or Sunday we should get them all planted up ready to go out in May.

We are hoping to use the greenhouses at Watermoor House to bring on our new hanging baskets ready for putting up in the Market Place over the summer.  They will be themed in Abbey 900 colours.  Its our way of supporting Abbey 900.
